In celebration of the German Day of Unity 2021, we are launching a creative industry competition, calling musicians, fashion Designers and cartoonists to join us in celebrating German-South African friendship – and win fantastic prizes.
On 3 October, we celebrate German Unity. In normal times, our national day is the occasion for big receptions or celebrations. However, while the Covid pandemic still holds South Africa and the world firmly in its grip, we are finding new ways to celebrate German-South African friendship.
We know that artists around the world have been hit especially hard by the pandemic. Therefore, the German Embassy wants to give something back to artists in South Africa. In celebration of the German Day of Unity 2021, we are launching a creative industry competition, calling musicians, fashion Designers and cartoonists to join us in celebrating German-South African friendship – and win fantastic prizes.

What are we looking for?
We are looking for an innovative design of a facemask representing South African-German friendship. The mask design should be in a printable, high-resolution format and needs to incorporate the wording “Germany in South Africa”. The winner will receive a cash prize of ZAR 10,000 and a workshop with South African designer Bathini. We are planning to produce the mask and use it for our public outreach Events.
Please submit your demo (mp3 format) of a South African-German theme song, which we will use for our social media videos and during Embassy events. The song should contain vocals and can be in any genre. The lyrics of the song should be in English or any official South African language. Length should be at least 3min 30sec (radio edit length). The winner will receive a cash prize of ZAR 10,000 and the once-in-a-lifetime chance to work in studio together with DJ Ralf Gum for final production and mix.
Germany and South Africa may be far apart geographically, economically, historically. Yet something they share is national transformation three decades ago – Germany reunified after the 1989 fall of the Berlin Wall, while the release of Nelson Mandela in 1990 began South Africa’s transition from Apartheid to democracy. As a young South African, what excites you about the relationship between South Africa and Germany, about their similarities or their differences? Or perhaps about how the two nations may be grappling in different ways with issues like climate change, economic growth, inequality, xenophobia, racism, reconciliation, the global pandemic? Can you express your opinion and attitude clearly in a cartoon?
Your cartoon (or comic strip) can be composed of one panel or more, maximum six panels.
Your drawing must be sent as a high-resolution jpg or PDF (300 DPI recommended) on A4 page 210 x 297mm. Both portrait and landscape orientation are accepted. Drawing must be your original work not copied from the work of others.
The overall winner will receive a cash prize of ZAR 10,000, as well as the opportunity to take part in a workshop with Zapiro.
In all the categories participants stand a chance to win prize money and/or other attractive prizes. Entries will be viewed and rated by a jury, consisting of members of the German Embassy and an external expert in the field.
