South African Diplomats (up to 90 days in 180 days)

South African Diplomatic Passport Holders (red passport) do not require a visa for Germany for up to 90 days within the 180 day period. Should you be required to travel to or have a flight connection in any other Schengen-country please contact the respective Embassy to find out if a visa is required.

South African Officials (up to 90 days in 180 days)

South African official passport holders (blue passport) do require a visa for Germany, even if they only have a flight connection to another Schengen-country. Officials have to come in person for the purpose of fingerprint scans to the external service provider for Schengen visa applications: TLScontact.

The following documents have to be submitted:

  • Note Verbale (original; photocopies/scans are only sufficient for groups traveling together where the original Note Verbale is provided with one of the group members´ applications)
  • Official passport with at least 2 empty visa pages and valid for at least 3 months after return to SA
  • One recent biometric passport picture
    Biometric specifications for photos PDF / 550 KB
  • Completed VIDEX online application form with barcode Link
  • Travel Health insurance in accordance with Schengen specifications (not required if the accompanying Note Verbale confirms that all medical costs for the stay including medical evacuation will be borne by the South African Government)

Other Diplomats and Officials (up to 90 days in 180 days)

Diplomats and Officials of other countries can contact us to find out whether a visa is required or not.

Accreditation for Diplomats and Officials

Please note that diplomats being accredited need to physically come to the German Embassy in Pretoria/German Consulate General in Cape Town (address below). Appointments can be booked through our online-booking system.

The following documents are required:

· Application form

· Paragraph 53-54 form for each applicant

· 1 biometric photo

· Note Verbale stating: position/predecessor

· Diplomatic passport

Please keep in mind for under aged children (normal passport holders/diplomatic Passport holders) we need the following additional documentation:

· Passport

· Passport photo

· Parents' Marriage certificate

· Copies of both parents' passports

· Unabridged birth certificate

Please ensure to present the original documents with one copy each.

Protocol advises that the processing of the long term visa can take 1-3 weeks, as the approval must come from the Federal Foreign Office in Berlin.

ONLY once the German Mission has received the approval from Germany we are able to issue the visa.
